“Autumn” (aka “Herbst”;
“Autumnus”), c1650, from the series of four plates published in Nuremburg, “The
Four Seasons”, after Adriaen Collaert’s (c1560–1618) engraving in
the same direction, c1587–88, after the design by Maarten de Vos (aka
Maarten de Vos; Maerten de Vos) (1532–1603).
The British
Museum offers the following description of Adriaen Collaert’s engraving of the
same design: “Autumn: Bacchus holding up a goblet with a bunch of grapes in it
with a cornucopia at his side in a landscape with
scenes of ploughing, wine making and sowing; in the sky the zodiac symbols of
Libra, Scorpio and Sagittarius; plate 3; after Maarten de Vos” (https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1870-0625-672).
Engraving on
fine laid paper with full margins as published including the binding holes at
left.
Size: (sheet) 27.3
x 34.5 cm; (plate) 20.9 x 26.5 cm; (image borderline) 19 x 26.1 cm.
Lettered in
plate below the image borderline in two columns of two lines of German.

Condition: a
strong impression with restored tears in the margin and stains in the margin.
There are two holes from the original binding in the margin at left.

this beautiful and graphically animated engraving showing Bacchus holding aloft a goblet bedecked with a bunch
of grapes in his left hand while in his other hand he holds a cornucopia filled
with harvest bounty while in the distance is a representation of the various
farming activities associated with the season of Autumn in the early 1600s, for
the total cost of AU$312 (currently US$209.17/EUR202.76/GBP176.83 at the time
of this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but
not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.
