(attrib.) Gregor Fentzel’s engraving, “Night”, c1650, after Adriaen Collaert and Maarten de Vos

(attrib.) Gregor Fentzel (aka Gregorius Fentzel) (fl. 1640–1660)

“Night”, c1650, from the series of four plates published in Nuremburg, “The Four Times of the Day and the Four Ages of Man”, after Adriaen Collaert’s (c1560–1618) engraving in the same direction, after the design by Maarten de Vos (aka Maarten de Vos; Maerten de Vos) (1532–1603).

The British Museum offers the following description of Adriaen Collaert’s engraving of the same design: “Nox slumbering on a cloud in the night sky with a procession illuminated by torches below and buildings with illuminated interiors; the black sky with stars and two bats; after Maarten de Vos” (https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1901-0611-81).

Engraving on fine laid paper backed with a support sheet.

Size: (support sheet) 37.1 x 42.7 cm; (sheet) 24.8 x 32 cm (plate) 21.5 x 27 cm; (image borderline) 18.8 x 26 cm.

Lettered in plate below the image borderline in two columns of two lines of German.

Hollstein 1408-1411 copy e (de Vos).

Condition: a strong impression with restored tears and printer’s creases, replenished gaps and stains in the margin, laid upon an archival support sheet of millennium quality washi paper providing wide margins.

I am selling this beautiful engraving showing the personification of night symbolised by the Roman god of night, Nox—interestingly, Nox is usually a shown as goddess rather than a god, but this chap does sport an interesting array of breasts and a curious hand gesture—resting on clouds accompanied by bats with stars beyond and with the representation of evening activities in the early 1600s, for the total cost of AU$312 (currently US$206.49/EUR201.76/GBP176.13 at the time of this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.

If you are interested in purchasing this rare engraving following the designs of Adriaen Collaert and Maarten de Vos, please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.
