Laurent Cars’ engraving, “Sébastien Bourdon”, 1733, after Hyacinthe Rigaud

Laurent Cars (1699–1771)

Sébastien Bourdon”, 1733, after Hyacinthe Rigaud (aka Hyacinthe Rigau y Ros; Híacint Francesc Honrat Mathias Pere Martyr Andreu Joan Rigau; Hyacinthe François Honorat Mathias Pierre André Rigaud) (1659–1743), a later impression published in Paris with the blind stamp of the Chalcographie du Louvre (fl. 1797–).

The Curator of the British Museum offers the following insight about this print: “As stated by the inscription, the plate was Cars's 'Morceau de réception' at the Académie. Bourdon died in 1671, so Rigaud's portrait was posthumous, and was adapted by him in a drawing made for the engraver. A related drawing is in the Städel Museum, Frankfurt am Main (Inv. No.1067)” (https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1910-0610-67).

Engraving on buff coloured laid paper with watermark and blind stamped with the seal of the Chalcographie du Louvre at lower centre.

Size: (sheet) 49.7 x 36.7 cm; (plate) 38.3 x 26.6 cm; (image borderline) 36.3 x 24.7 cm.

Lettered in plate within the image borderline: (lower centre) “fait par H. Rigaud”; (lower left-of-centre) “SEBASTIEN BOURDON/ de Monpellier Peintre ordinaire du Roy, Recteur en son/ Academie de Peinture et de Sculpture/ Gravé par Laurent Cars pour sa reception a l'Academie en 1733”
