Mauro Gandolfi (1764–1834)

“Judith Emportant la Tête d'Olopherne” (Judith Carrying the Head of Olofernes), c1790–1819, after the intermediary design by Johann Erdmann Hummel (1769–1852), after Cristofano Allori’s (1577–1621) painting in the Pitti Palace, Florence, published in Paris by Henri Laurent (aka Pierre Louis Henri Laurent) (1779–1844) for the Musée Napoléon (see: https://www.worldcat.org/title/967653744).

Engraving on fine wove paper (watermarked: “MUSÉE NAPOLÉON/ PUBLIÉ PAR HENRI LAURENT”) with wide margins.

Size: (sheet) 55 x 41.2 cm; (plate) 40.4 x 33 cm; (image borderline) 29.6 x 23.8 cm.

Lettered in plate below the image borderline: (left) “Peint par Allori.”; (centre) “Dessiné par Hummel./ JUDITH EMPORTANT LA TÊTE D'OLOPHERNE.”; (right) “Gravé par Gandolfi.”

Nagler 4 (G.K. Nagler 1837, “Neues allgemeines Künstler-Lexicon oder Nachrichten von dem Leben und den Werken der Maler, Bildhauer, Kupferstecher, Formschneider, Lithographen: Gallimberti–Haslöhk”, p. 9 [see https://archive.org/details/bub_gb_4KxMQ6Pmy0oC/page/n13/mode/2up]).

The British Museum offers the following description of this print: “Judith holding the head of Holofernes in her left hand, a sword in her right, accompanied by her maidservant at right, after Allori” (https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1867-1214-776).

Condition: a strong and near faultless impression with generously wide margins and in a near pristine condition (i.e., there are no tears, holes, folds, abrasions, stains or foxing).

I am selling this masterwork of engraving—note the subtlety of the engraver’s use of tonal gradations without harsh contrast and ability to connote the different weights and surface qualities of the fabrics represented—for AU$253 (currently US$168.86/EUR163.62/GBP141.94 at the time of posting this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.

If you are interested in purchasing this superbly executed and very beautiful engraving, please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.
