(attrib.) Gregor Fentzel’s engraving, “Winter”, c1650, after Adriaen Collaert and Maarten de Vos

(attrib.) Gregor Fentzel (aka Gregorius Fentzel) (fl. 1640–1660)

“Winter” (aka “Hyems”; “Hiems Aeolos”; “Aeolian Winter”), c1650, from the series of four plates published in Nuremburg, “The Four Seasons”, after Adriaen Collaert’s (c1560–1618) engraving in the same direction, c1587–88, after the design by Maarten de Vos (aka Maarten de Vos; Maerten de Vos) (1532–1603).

Engraving on fine laid paper with replenished areas of the margins and backed with a support sheet.

Size: (support sheet) 37 x 43.2 cm; (sheet) 24.8 x 31.2 cm; (plate) 21.4 x 26.7 cm; (image borderline) 19.2 x 26.3 cm.

Lettered in plate below the image borderline in two columns of two lines of German.

Hollstein 1408–1411 copy e (de Vos).

The British Museum offers the following description of Adriaen Collaert’s engraving of the same design: “Winter: Aeolus holding up a bridle? and sitting on the four winds in a wintry landscape with a frozen river and skaters; also figures pollarding trees and slaughtering animals; in the distance is a storm at sea with boats tossed on the large waves; in the sky the zodiac symbols of Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces; plate 4; after Maarten de Vos. Engraving” (https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1870-0625-673).

Condition: a strong impression with replenished areas in the margin and laid upon a sheet of millennium quality washi paper providing wide margins.

I am selling this beautiful and graphically animated engraving showing Aeolus, the mythological King of Aeolia—father of Alcyone (aka the fabled kingfisher) and protector of her eggs laid in holes by the waterside from storms and wild seas during what has become known as the “halcyon days” (my apologies for any misunderstanding about this myth)— sitting on the four winds with the background showing ice-skaters on a frozen river, peasants slaughtering and the zodiac signs of Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces, for the total cost of AU$312 (currently US$217.77/EUR201.11/GBP178.01 at the time of this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.
