Johann Christian Reinhart’s etching, “Dog Laying Down”, 1800

Johann Christian Reinhart (1761–1847)

“Dog Laying Down” (aka “Lying Dog”; “Liegender Hund”), 1800, from the second series of animal depictions (“Die Zweite Thierfolge”).

Etching on wove paper with wide margins (as published?).

Size: (sheet) 28.3 x 39.5 cm; (plate) 12.9 x 19.2 cm.

Inscribed in plate: (upper left) “J C Reinhart fect Romae 1800”.

Andresen 83 (A Andresen 1878, “Der Deutschen Maler-Radierer des 19 Jahrhunderts”, 5 vols, Leipzig); Feuchtmayr 83 (Inge Feuchtmayr 1998, “Johann Christian Reinhart 1761-1847: Monographie und Katalog”, Munich, Prestel).

See also the descriptions of this print offered by The British Museum and The Art Institute of Chicago: https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1869-0410-1692; https://www.artic.edu/artworks/129571/dog-laying-down-from-from-die-zweite-thierfolge.

Condition: a strong impression in an excellent condition with no tears, stains or foxing.

I am selling this superb etching of a resting hunting hound (based on its collar and mindful that Reinhart was a keen hunter), but still very alert (judging from its watchful eye), for the total cost of AU$276 (currently US$188.52/EUR177.42/GBP156.21 at the time of this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.

If you are interested in purchasing spectacularly fine etching of a dog—note the touch of a master artist to visually “explain” the form of the dog and, importantly, the subtle play of its muscles under the skin—please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.
