John Thomas Smith (aka Antiquity Smith) (1766–1833)
“Woman Collecting Wood with a Castle in the Distance” (descriptive
title only), 1793, from the series, “Twenty Rural Landscapes from Nature, Drawn
and Etched by J. T. Smith”, published in London by Nathaniel Smith (1738-1809)
in 1793. Based on the fine paper of this impression and how it is trimmed, this
impression may be from the John McCreery edition of 1816 after which the
plate was lost/destroyed.
Etching on fine China paper, trimmed around the image
borderline and backed with a support sheet.
Size: (sheet) 13.2 x 10.9 cm.
Inscribed in plate: (upper centre) “J: T: S. fect”.
The British Museum offers the following description of this
print: “Rural view with a woman carrying logs in the centre, a tree trunk in
the right foreground, a castle on a hill in the right background, mountains
beyond, a view in the left background; 1793 publication” (https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1865-0610-995
).
Condition: a well-printed impression, trimmed around the
image borderline and laid upon an archival support sheet of millennium quality
washi paper. The sheet is in an excellent condition with no tears, holes,
folds, abrasions, stains or foxing.
