Jean Michel Mathieux-Marie (1947–)—famous
for developing the dry-dash (le tireté-sec) technique of engraving, described in
Wikipedia as “[transl.] …a dotted engraving process. On a matrix, the engraver
makes a series of aligned notches, created by the successive rebounds of a
metal blade” (https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Michel_Mathieux-Marie).
“Rivage
I” and “Rivage II” (Shore I & 2) with accompanying sheet inscribed in
pencil with publication details and signed by the artist, 1982.
Two drypoints printed separately on cream
chine collé (Japon paper) on heavy wove paper, hand-signed, titled and numbered
“27” in an edition of 80 impressions (27/80). Based on the fineness of line
shown in these prints, I assume that they were executed on steel plates with a
diamond point (as this is an approach that I understand the artist often uses).
Size: (each of the three sheets) 26 x 19 cm; (plate “I”) 6.7 x 9.7 cm;
(plate “II”) 6.7 x 10.1 cm.
Condition: strong and near faultless impressions in pristine
condition.
I am selling this pair of poetically beautiful drypoints, showing with
the greatest of subtlety different morning (or evening) cloud effects observed
above a beach, executed by one of the most inventive of the modern day masters
of engraving—not only is Jean Michel Mathieux-Marie famous for developing the
tireté-sec technique, but he is also known for his inventive use of dual black
and white printing plates (please forgive me if explanation is inexact)—for the
total cost of AU$362 for the pair plus the hand-written cover sheet (currently
US$241.96/EUR218.93/GBP192.72 at the time of this listing) including postage
and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes
imposed by some countries.
If you are interested in purchasing this breathtakingly fine
pair of small drypoints, please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I
will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.
