Tancrède Abraham’s etching with drypoint, “L'Étang de Kernézet”, 1881

Tancrède Abraham (1836–1895)

“L'Étang de Kernézet” (The Pond of Kernezet), 1881, after the artist’s painting exhibited in the Salon of 1881 (as inscribed in plate), printed in Paris by Alfred Salmon (aka Adolphe Ardail; Salmon & Ardail; Alfred Fortuné Salmon) (fl.1863–1894) and published in between pages 78 and 79 in the 1st July edition of the art periodical, “Gazette des Beaux-Arts”, 1881.

Etching and drypoint on laid paper with small margins and backed with a support sheet (providing wider margins).

Size: (sheet) 20.2 x 28.5 cm; (plate) 17 x 25 cm; (image borderline) 14.7 x 22.4 cm.

Inscribed in plate within the image borderline: (lower left edge) “TANCREDE ABRAHAM”.

Lettered in plate below the image borderline: (left) “Tancrède Abraham. pinx. & sc./ Gazette des Beaux-Arts.”; (centre) “L'ÉTANG DE KERNÉZET”; (right) Salon de 1881./ Imp. A. Salmon, Paris.”

Beraldi 17 (Henri Beraldi 1885, “Les Graveurs du XIX Siecle”, Paris, Librairie L. Conquet, vol. 1, p.12, cat. no. 1 [see https://archive.org/details/lesgraveursdu19e01berauoft/page/10/mode/2up]); IFF (p. 22).

See also the description of this print offered by the Musée Départemental Breton: (transl.) “Etching by Tancrède Abraham representing a landscape (trees and hills encircling a pond) and, in the centre of the image, a couple of women, in traditional costume (headdress, apron) at the edge of the pond” (https://musee-breton.finistere.fr/r/93a49aeb-466a-4180-be5d-d058294b3a20).

Condition: a richly inked and well-printed (near faultless) impression with small margins around the platemark and laid onto a support of archival (millennium quality) washi paper providing wide margins. Beyond minor age-toning on the left edge, the sheet is in an excellent condition with no tears, holes, folds, abrasions, significant stains or foxing.

I am selling this remarkably strong etching of a pond (l'étang) near Kernezet in Western Brittany (France) rendered with great insight and skill—note, for instance, the way how the artist has added contour strokes within the dark foliage masses giving the trees detail and form—for AU$190 (currently US$127/EUR114.91/GBP101.15 at the time of this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.

If you are interested in purchasing this marvellously etching rich in tonal contrast and detail, please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.
