Luigi Fabri’s etching, “The Persian Sibyl”, c.1832, after Michelangelo

Luigi Fabri (aka Aloysius Fabri) (1775/78–1835)

“The Persian Sibyl” (aka “Persicha”), c.1832 (1831–34), plate 4 (“IV”) from the series of 37 plates, “Volta Della Cappella Sistina” (of which Fabri etched 12 plates [see https://archive.org/details/aey9923.0001.001.umich.edu/page/118/mode/1up]), published by Calcografia Camerale (Rome), after the intermediary drawing by Jacob Conca of one of Michelangelo Buonarroti’s (1475–1564) fresco pendentives showing prophets and sibyls featured in the Sistine Chapel ceiling.

Etching on heavy wove paper with full margins as published.

Size: (sheet) 96.5 x 67.5 cm; (plate) 88.7 x 59.5 cm; (image borderline) 82.5 x 55 cm

Inscribed in plate within the image: (upper left) “MICHAEL ANGELVS/ BONAROTIUS/ PINXIT”; (upper right) “IN SIXTINO/ VATICANO/ SACELLO”; (lower centre) “PERSICHA”.

Lettered in plate below the image borderline: (left) “Michael Angelus Bonarotius pinx.”; (centre) “Jacob. Conca delineavit”; “LEONI DUODECIMO PONT. MAX./ In Roma presso la Calcografia Camerale”; (right) “Aloys Fabri sculp. Romae/ IV./ ALOYOIVS FABRI D. D. D.”

Condition: a strong and near faultless impression with generously wide margins. This is an exceptionally large print. There is scattered pale foxing verso with minor cockling to the paper from being rolled in storage. The image area is in a near faultless condition with minor chips and marks in the margins.

I am selling this immense (absolutely huge!) etching of Michelangelo’s very famous “Persian Sibyl” for the total cost of AU$525 (currently US$350.91/EUR317.50/GBP279.49 at the time of posting this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.
