Hendrik Adriaan van Rheede tot Drakenstein (1636–1691) and his workshop of twenty-five engravers

“Cactus: Schadida-calli”, 1678, published as a huge gatefold engraving on page 80 (Fig. 42) to the first comprehensive documentation on the flora of Asia and the tropics with the title of each of the 740 plants described in the 12-volume treatise recorded (as in this engraving) in Latin, Malay, Arabic, and Sanskrit: “Hortus Indicus Malabaricus …” (The Indian Malabaric garden), vol. 2, published in Amsterdam in 1678 by Johann van Someren (aka Johan van Someren) (1622–1678).

Engraving on fine laid paper with the 1672 watermark of the Seven Provinces (Amsterdam) (WA Churchill no. 112, p. LXXX) and gatefold as published.

Size: (sheet) 38.1 x 47.8 cm; (plate) 33.9 x 44.5 cm.

Numbered and fettered in plate at upper left: “F. 42./ Schadidà-calli. lat./ […] mal./ […] Arab./ […] bram.”

Lifetime impression (based on the watermark date [1672] and the quality of line showing no sign of wear to the printing plate) as published in 1678.

Condition: a strong and well-printed impression on a full sheet and centrefold (flattened) as published. The sheet is in a near pristine condition with no tears, holes, folds, abrasions, stains or foxing.

I am selling this exceptionally rare lifetime impression (1678) in a near pristine condition from the first publication—a true historical milestone! —detailing the plants of South Asia and the tropics (with a special focus on Indian medicinal plants) for the total cost of AU$385 (currently US$257.33/EUR232.84/GBP204.96 at the time of posting this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.
