Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione’s etching, "Man Holding a Large Banderole”, 1645–50

Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione (aka Il Grechetto) (1609–1664)

"Man Holding a Large Banderole” (TIB title) (aka “Un homme tenant de la main droit une large banderole …” [Bartsch]), 1645–50, from the series of 16 plates (TIB 32–47), “Small Studies of Heads in Oriental Headdress”. This is a late impression published in 1816 by J. McCreery in the “200 Etchings”.

Etching on fine wove paper trimmed around the platemark and backed with a support sheet.

Size: (sheet) 11.2 x 8.3 cm.

Numbered in plate at lower-right corner: “1”.

TIB 46 (32). 35 (21) (Paolo Bellini [ed.] 1982, “The Illustrated Bartsch: Italian Masters of the Seventeenth Century”, vol. 46, New York, Abaris Books, p. 46, cat. no 46 [32]); Bellini 1982 37.II (Paolo Bellini 1982, “L'Opera incisa di Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione”, Milan, Comune di Milano, p. 128, cat. 37); Bartsch XXI.32.46.

The British Museum offers the following description of this print: “Head partly hidden behind a scroll. c.1645/50 Etching” (https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1871-0812-40).

See also the description of this print at the Rijksmuseum: http://hdl.handle.net/10934/RM0001.COLLECT.34982.

Condition: a well-printed impression trimmed around the platemark and laid onto a support of archival (millennium quality) washi paper providing wide margins. The sheet is in an excellent condition with no tears, holes, folds, abrasions, significant stains or foxing.

I am selling this superb etching by the artist argued to be the inventor of the monotype for AU$299 (currently US$196.23/EUR181.32/GBP154.85 at the time of this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries).

If you are interested in purchasing this arresting study that the Rijksmuseum proposes is “inspired by similar etchings by Rembrandt and Lievens” (see RP-P-OB-12.185), please contact me (oz_jim@printsandprinciples.com) and I will send you a PayPal invoice to make the payment easy.
