Ferdinando
Cassina (fl.1830–1840) and Camera (fl.1837–1842)
“Christ
on the Cross with the Virgin, St Lawrence and Donors”, 1830, after a painting
by Girolamo Siciolante da Sermoneta (aka Girolamo Sicciolante da
Sermoneta) (1521–c.1580) in the Chapel
of St. Lorenzo in the Palestrina Cathedral (aka Duomo
di Palestrina; Cattedrale di Sant'Agapito martire), Italy.
The
panel orientated anti-clockwise to the left above the crucifixion scene is an
engraving of the marble grave plaque of Lucrezia
Della Rovere Colonna (1485–1552)
in the floor of the Church of Santissima Trinità dei Mont in Rome (see https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Trinit%C3%A0_dei_monti,_interno,_lapide_di_lucrezia_della_rovere_colonna.JPG).
Although I have been unable to clarify with certainty that the female donor
shown in the crucifixion panel is Lucrezia Della Rovere Colonna—famous as a
patron of the arts at the time that Girolamo Siciolante da Sermoneta executed
the crucifixion painting—I can see a possibility that this patron may be the
same as the one portrayed as the portal of Palestrina Cathedral in which the
painting is located bears the marble coats of arms of the Della Rovere and
Colonna families.
Engraving
on cream wove paper with gouache hand-colouring, trimmed with a small margin
around the image borderline.
Note
that the hand-colouring is possibly executed by the engravers, mindful that The
Royal Collection Trust holds another engraving by both of these engravers with
hand-colouring (presumably by Camera) from the same series of engravings (see https://www.rct.uk/collection/search#/5/collection/607020/louise-of-savoye) and the Trust also has another
hand-coloured engraving executed solely by Camera (see https://www.rct.uk/collection/search#/6/collection/607014/carlotta-daughter-of-john-ii-of-cyrus-and-wife-of-louis-i-duke-of-savoy).
See
also a related print by the same engravers that I have previously listed: https://www.printsandprinciples.com/2022/01/engraving-with-hand-colouring-by.html.
Size:
(sheet) 40.8 x 26 cm.
Lettered
in the plate: (in cartouche) “D.O.M/ LVCRETIAE. RVERAE/ IVLI.II.PONT.MAX/
SORORIS.FILIAE/ M.ANTONI.COLVMNAE/ VXORI/ VIXIT.ANN.LXVII/ FILIAE.MATRI.DVLCISS/
Condition:
a well-printed engraving with very finely executed hand-colouring. The sheet
has minor surface marks and pale foxing, otherwise the sheet is in a good
condition with no tears, holes, folds, abrasions, significant stains.
I am
selling this curiously wonderful engraving with its beautifully rendered
figures of donors that may be executed by the hand(s) of the original engravers
(based on other prints of the series having details painted by the same
artists), for the total cost of AU$298 (currently US$195.83/EUR180.24/GBP154.69
at the time of posting this listing) including postage and handling to anywhere
in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some
countries.
