Adolphe Appian (aka Jacques Barthelemy Adolphe Appian) (1818–1898)
“Rural landscape featuring a figure and cattle near a stream with a
headland in the distance” (descriptive title only), c.1870. The scene is
possibly set in Italy (as proposed by the French dealer from whom I purchased
the drawing), but I am mindful that the area in which Appian mainly worked was
near Lyon (France). Hopefully someone may recognise the distant escarpment and
will let me know the location of this scene so that I can put an end to my
speculation.
Charcoal and white chalk drawing with stumping on blue-grey coloured
laid paper unevenly shaped with a curved upper edge, pencil signed by the
artist at lower left and backed with a support sheet.
Size: (sheet) 29 x 43.5 cm.
Condition: The sheet has a thin area in the sky at right and there are
roughened areas in the shadows of the tree at left (by the artist?), otherwise
the sheet is in a good condition with no tears, folds or significant stains and
has been laid onto a support of archival (millennium quality) washi paper
providing wide margins.
I am selling this pencil-signed original drawing by Adolphe Appian that
(to my eyes) appears to be drawn on location in the manner of the Barbizon artists—mindful
that Appian was a friend of the luminaries of that school, Camille Corot
and Charles-François Daubigny—for AU$734 in total
(currently/approximately US$486.43/ EUR449.56/ GBP386.41 at the time of this
listing) including Express Mail (EMS) postage and handling to anywhere in the
world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.
Note that payment is in Australian dollars (AU$734) as this is my currency.
If you are interested in purchasing this museum quality drawing by one
