Hans Springinklee and/or Erhard Schön, “St Sebastian Martyred”, 1516

(Attributed to) Hans Springinklee (1490/95–[after]1527) and/or Erhard Schön (c.1491–1542)

Note that in addition to this woodcut, Springinklee and Schön are attributed to having executed two different woodcuts of St. Sebastian (see [Springinklee] TIB 12.38 and [Schön] Hollstein German 4.29) that were all published in “Hortulus Animae”.

“St Sebastian Martyred” (BM title), 1516, woodcut illustration to the Latin edition of the Anton Koberger’s (c.1440-1513), prayer book, “Hortulus Animae” (Little Garden of the Soul), published and printed in c.1516 in Lyon by Johann Clein (fl.c.1516–c.1530) (see https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_1904-0206-26).

Woodcut and letterpress printed in black and red ink on laid paper trimmed around the image and writing edge and backed with a support sheet.

Size: (sheet) 10.9 x 7 cm; (image borderline) 8.9 x 7 cm.

Lettered below the image borderline: (possibly with many mistakes in my reading of the four lines of Latin text) “Od agne fidei sanctissime sebastiane nules beatiffime: cuius meritis et precibus tota parrria lobardie a mortifera peste fuitlibe rata: intercede p nobis ad onm nostruz iesum”.

(Transl. with apologies for errors) “Blessed is the most holy lamb of faith, Sebastian: by whose merits and prayers the whole country was spared from the Mortiferous pestilence [i.e. the plague]: intercede for us to Jesus.”

Note that this woodcut closely follows Albrecht Dürer’s engraving: “Saint Sebastian” (http://hdl.handle.net/10934/RM0001.COLLECT.33159)—mindful that Hans Springinklee was a pupil of Dürer

Condition: a strong and near faultless impression—a lifetime impression based on the quality of the line showing no sign of wear to the printing plate—trimmed around the image and lines of text and laid onto a support of archival (millennium quality) washi paper providing wide margins. Beyond appropriate age toning, the sheet is in a near pristine condition for its considerable age with no tears, holes, folds, abrasions or stains.

I am selling this magnificent woodcut with lines of Latin text designed as a prayer to St Sebastian for the saint to intercede on behalf of the supplicant with Jesus, for AU$339 in total (currently/approximately US$226.51/ EUR208.08/ GBP178.56 at the time of this listing) including Express Mail (EMS) postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries. Note that payment is in Australian dollars (AU$339) as this is my currency.
