Georg Erler (aka Georg
Oskar Erler) (1871–1951)—a Dresden based artist and Professor at the Dresden
School of Applied arts, highly skilled in etching and lithography, but sadly much
of his work was destroyed in the bombing of Dresden in 1945 (see https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georg_Erler_(K%C3%BCnstler).
“Rübezahl and the Weaving Death” (aka “Rübezahl und der Webende Tod”), c1910, a small zincograph
showing the legendary mountain spirit, Rübezahl—known in Silesian folklore as a
trickster and ruthless guardian against injustice, as popularised by Carl Hauptmann (aka Carl Ferdinand Max
Hauptmann) (1858–1921) (see https://www.projekt-gutenberg.org/hauptmac/ruebezal/ruebez01.html)—awakened
to the plight of the Silesian weavers represented by of the personification of death
working a loom.
Colour zincograph (lithograph from a zinc
plate rather than from a limestone plate) on wove paper with a small margin
around the image and backed with a support sheet.
Size: (sheet) 17.2 x 12.4 cm.
Inscribed in plate at lower right with the
artist’s monogram: “G.O.E.” (Georg Oskar Erler).
Condition: a near faultless impression with no
tears, holes or folds, but with a few minor stains, laid upon a support sheet
of archival (millennium quality) washi paper providing wide margins.
I am selling this small and wonderful colour
lithograph, showing the folklore mountain spirit of the Silesian people, Rübezahl,
peering down from his home in the Giant Mountains (Karkonosze)—a mountain range
north of the Czech Republic and south-west of Poland—at the death-like conditions
of workers in the weaving mills—symbolised by the figure of death weaving—for
AU$172 in total (currently/approximately US$116.36/EUR107.03/GBP90.16 at the
time of posting this listing) including Express Mail (EMS) postage and handling
to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed
by some countries. Note that payment is in Australian dollars (AU$172) as this
is my currency.
