Etching on wove paper, trimmed with a margin around the image borderline and backed with a support sheet.

Size: (sheet) 41 x 24.5 cm; (image borderline) 31.5 x 17.9 cm.

Lettered above the image borderline: “Genoveva”.

Lettered below the image borderline: “Der Saechsische Kunstverein semen Mitgliedern Für das Jahr 1848 [The Saxon Art Association and its members for the year 1848]/ L. RICHTER INV. and SCULP.”.

Johann Friedrich Hoff in his catalogue of Richter’s works (2^nd edition, 1922) offers the following description of this print: (Transl.] “Tall trees rise above a rocky cave and intertwine to form a canopy of leaves, through the middle of which only a light shines; in the background you can see grazing deer. Genoveva with Schmerzenreich and the hind sits in the sunshine on a flowery lawn next to a spring, peacefully surrounded by birds and animals of the forest.” (p. 82, cat. no. 446).

The British Museum offers a description of a later impression of this print (1874) with the line of text below the image erased: https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/P_2006-0130-2.

Condition: a strong impression trimmed within the platemark and laid onto a support sheet of archival (millennium quality) washi paper. The sheet is in a very good condition with no tears, folds or significant stains, but there is minor scuffing of the image borderline lines at upper right.

I am selling this remarkably fine and exceptionally beautiful etching showing Genevieve of Brabant and her son being fed by a roe deer—I understand that Genevieve was an outcast forced to live in a cave with her son for six years following being falsely accused of adultery (see https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/term/BIOG195930)—for AU$276 in total (currently/approximately US$183.53/EUR171.20/GBP145.38 at the time of posting this listing) including Express Mail (EMS) postage and handling to anywhere in the world, but not (of course) any import duties/taxes imposed by some countries.
